The Pulse is the first dual band wireless thermometer combining Sub 1Ghz and BLE connectivity. Constructed with ultra durable ceramic and stainless steel, the Pulse can withstand extreme temperatures and wet conditions. It’s also the first probe to use a hexagonal tube which reduces the cross section profile of the hole left in the cooked meat (which is important to the pro BBQ folks). The Pulse is actually two products - the probe and the charger. One of FireBoard’s most popular products is the Drive system. Drive allows users to control the temperature of their charcoal grills automatically. The G3 Blower is a refreshed design of the original. The redesign incorporates full stainless steel frame construction and a weather shield made with glass-filled nylon for heat resistance and durability. Click the image for more information.

The FireBoard Spark is the first WiFi and Bluetooth enabled smart Instant Read Thermometer with leave-in probe functionality. The Spark was designed to be a multi-functional tool used in the kitchen and out on the grill. It has an IP66 rating which was no small feat to accomplish with the overmolded TPE material mating with a cast aluminum front case on a non linear parting line. Not to mention the various jacks, and other through case components. I designed and engineered this product for manufacturing in less than 6 months while also incorporating PCB adjustments and supplier component challenges along the way. I also contributed to the UI/UX by providing menu flow design and graphic information layout. The screen size also came from my recommendation which helps the user read the temp from a distance. The spark has been well received by existing FireBoard customers as well as new BBQ enthusiasts and home chefs. It even won an award! Click the image to see more on FireBoard’s website.

BBQ enthusiasts utilize wired thermometer probes to continually check internal temperatures while cooking. These wired probes are cumbersome to store and most solutions simply wind the wire around some sort of spool. I wanted to take a different approach and hide the messy wires inside of a stackable pouch. Using TPE allowed for a vibrant color pallet as well as a cleanable solution. I designed and engineered everything you see in this rendering. This was by far the most work I’ve done combing design and engineering. Roughly 60 parts/molds. All parts were molded using the CAD I provided to the suppliers. The manufacturing variety was wide ranging. The Mamba Monster X8S is a high powered electronic speed controller for large radio controlled vehicles. It’s predecessor was outdated and under-powered. Pulling cues from the highly successful Mamba X speed controller, the 8S extends the brand value of the Mamba product line. Consumers will associate the high quality of the Mamba X with this new addition simply by recognizing these visual cues. This product was designed before exiting Castle - some features were changed but the majority of them remain true to the original design concept. Sidewinder 4 is an electronic speed controller for radio control cars and trucks. The project goal was to update an existing line of Sidewinder controllers with a new look and improved performance. We achieved this by increasing the cooling fan size and adding functional venting that allows the unit to exhaust heat more efficiently than its predecessors. The results were better than anyone expected with an improved overall performance of more than 40% better run times and higher load capability. The B-LINK is a bluetooth adapter that allows hobbyists to make settings changes to their electronic speed controllers from their smart devices. The board layout was completed when I began this project. Many iterations of form development were completed to arrive at the final design. Factors effecting the design included water proof overmolding of the PCB, small form factor and versatile mounting features. Click the image to see more on Castle’s website.

Pivot Watch is a crop irrigation monitor that allows a farmer to check status by using an app on a smart device. The challenge was to develop a mounting solution for a variety of pivot arm diameters while also accommodating any other wires/pipes that might be installed on the arm. Design project to improve the look of industrial metering pump. Variety of form factors were presented with the client choosing the preferred solution. Challenges included mounting plate for easy install/removal and carrying features due to dense weight of unit.

SportFans is an invention I developed while working for Nemo Ventures. I had an idea for a window mounted turbine to power USB devices and at the time we were looking into sports licensing for other products. I married the two together and SportFans was born. We received a utility patent and licensed the product to Rico Industries which landed a spot on HSN. Product sold well! Click the image to see the HSN spot.

The LampChamp product is an invention I brought to Nemo Ventures for development. It turns almost any table lamp into a USB charger using the light socket. The bulb screws into LampChamp and is operated by the integrated on/off switch. We filed for a utility patent in February of 2014 and after fully developing, manufacturing and launching the product on Amazon, we discovered another party filed for a similar patent three months prior to ours. Ultimately, we could not protect our invention and they have taken over the product which is still sold on Amazon under a new name: LampCharger. We also had an as seen on TV spot made. Cuplettes are an invention I developed independently and brought to Nemo Ventures. The product allows bakers to create cupcakes with fillable centers rather than cutting out by hand. While at Nemo Ventures we retooled with a new supplier and got the product into an as seen on TV spot. The spot performed well but didn’t hit the numbers for a national rollout. This bottle is the replacement to a design that Dr Pepper Snapple Group could not sunset because of its popularity. This design outperformed the incumbent in every metric during consumer studies. It’s currently the bottle of choice for some 20+ flavored beverage brands in DPSG’s portfolio. This design was one I created and developed for manufacturing while working at R&D/Leverage.

I was fortunate to work for Garmin ID when the group was small and designers were able to design the entire product to bring to market. These are a few that I designed!
